ptna_20170608top.jpgThe writing examination for the "Teachers' License" (pass/fail evaluation) and the "ing program" (certificate) were held on April 29th and May 1st at 19 venues across the nation, and a total of 128 piano teachers participated.
Writing examination is 90 min paper test, which consists of listening, harmony, analysis, music history, pedagogy. It is held twice a year, and spring exam uses the repertoire of PTNA piano competition, and autumn session uses those of PTNA piano STEP. 1 month prior to the exam, a preparatory study session was held in Tokyo, which was live streamed on YouTube.

Here are the repertoires of the spring exam this year. All the listed pieces were from 2017 PTNA Piano Competition repertoire.

Baroque - J.S.Bach: Invention No.7 (grade C)
Classic - Beethoven: German Dance (grade A1),  Clementi: Sonatine Op.36-4 (grade B)
Roman - Rebikov : Melancholic Waltz Op.2-3 (grade C), Chopin: Waltz Op.69-1
Modern - Noriko Kume: A Japanese Summer Festival (grade A1)

Masayo Nagata, who has completed all the grades of Teachers' License exam, began to conduct the exam at her local town where she serves as the representative of the Kakegawa East Station. 2 weeks before the exam, she held a study session with other colleagues, and each of the 8 participants gave presentations of what they had studied. One of them made an impressive presentation on Beethoven's "German Dance". This piece is originally written for orchestra, and thus she tried to play this piece with electone and MD to produce orchestral sounds, so that everyone can hear this piano solo piece more symphonic. She has graduated from the electone department of a music college, and this creative idea inspired other colleagues.

Yumiko Okazaki has already passed the elementary level of the License exam, and is now studying for the intermediate and the advanced level. When she participated in the exam for the first time in 2013, she didn't know how to study properly as there was no preparatory study session. It was from 2015 that the exam repertoires became announced beforehand, and she could study exam pieces more in depth. She admits that this writing exam is a good opportunity to look back to what she has studied in various seminars like Comprehensive Musicianship Seminar. This exam also requires to answer how to solve issues in a certain situation which could happened in daily lessons. She tried to review her own way of teaching, and also learned a lot from other teachers' example answers (examples will be sent after exams).

PTNA License Exam consists of writing exam (twice a year), demonstration lessons for 10-15min, performance (4 periods), and essay writing.
