New Japanese compositions have been played as one of the required repertoires since its establishment. It had been commissioned for 10 years, and then the public audition was inaugurated in 1987. The number of applicants has steadily increased and we received 178 applications in 2013.

Every year, those pieces are examined twice at the New Composition Selection Committee, chaired by Prof.Hideo Arashino (composer). In early April the 2nd round was held, after the paper screening last December, in order to examine the selected 29 pieces with live performances. As a result, 8 pieces were chosen and recommended to be a part of the competition repertoires from 2015 onward. (Composers' names and profiles had been kept secret until the 2nd round was completed). The final decision will be made by the Competition Repertoire Selection Committee chaired by Mitsuyo Esaki.

Prof. Arashino commented that the competition repertoires should be oriented to each age category, and thus, should be clearly expressed what they want pianists to learn and feel. He recommends applicants to listen to the live performances at competition sites, look into the past repertoires, and think how their pieces convey and encourage the musical growth of children.

Sanae Takagi, one of the 8 pianists who gave live performance demonstration, said that the pieces would become a "real piece" by being played by many participants, and that she felt responsible to be a part of the selection process.
